Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ slots into the series’ confusing timeline as a distant prequel where everyone is now a keyblade wielder! Guided by catlike creatures called Chirithy, players have to explore worlds from Disney movies like Alice in Wonderland and Aladdin while fighting off the Heartless once again. Now there’s Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ (pronounced “chi” or “key” because why would any game in this series have a normal title), a port of a browser game that initially seemed promising but ended up leaving me cold. Well maybe not the most boring way possible, but we don’t talk about All the Bravest. Guardian Cross’ dull gameplay and poor presentation almost put me off the sub-genre completely and while it hit the right nostalgic notes, Final Fantasy: Record Keeper brought back ATB-style combat in the most boring way possible. While their Dragon Quest and The World Ends With You ports are great (at least when they’re actually functioning on newer operating systems), I’ve never quite understood the appeal of any of their free-to-play RPGs for phones and tablets. I can’t say I’ve particularly cared for many of Square-Enix’s mobile offerings.
